Zimbabwe will not host the 2019 CASAFA tournament: Coventry
ZIMBABWE will no longer host the 2019 COSAFA Cup tournament. The tournament was scheduled to begin on May 19.
Speaking to journalists in Harare on Monday, Minister for Youth, Arts and Sports, Kirsty Coventry said that hosting CASAFA is not good for the country and the Zimbabwe Football Association.
Said Coventry: “. . . it’s been agreed that the deal was just not very good for the country or for Zifa so we will not be hosting the Cosafa games this year but we look forward to having adequate time to be able to host a world-class event in the near future.
“We want to make sure that when we do host events of this magnitude that we are fully prepared, we have good timing and just don’t feel that was really given to us.”
Cosafa had named Zimbabwe as the hosts for the tournament last and were only waiting approval from the government.
However, Minister of Sports Kirsty Coventry revealed on Monday that the tournament will not be held in the country. She said the move was not ideal for both the Zimbabwe Football Association and the country as the announcement was made at a short notice.
Zimbabwe last hosted the event in 2009 where they won the trophy after beating Zambia in the final.
